30 Day Challenge

Friday, July 29th, 2011

I have been sorely missing my blog and blogging in general yet still felt unmotivated in getting back into it.  That's why I was excited to find out about the 30 Day Challenge on TurnJacson's awesome blog.  It sounded fun and would get me here on the blog every day.  Hell, why not?

I realize I likely have 0 readers left, but that is okay.  I write for me; I write because I can't not write.  Maybe someday someone will stumble upon these words I have left out in cyberspace and will be moved by them, or at least enjoy them for awhile.  That is enough for me.

So, for any faithful readers that may come here from time to time to see if I'm still alive, I will be here at least for the next 30 days consistently!  (Well, I hope I will - we all know "consistency" and "schedules" aren't really in my vocabulary).

(Many thanks to the creator of this challenge - who is also trying to get back into the swing of blogging - Miss Taylor Cast!)

Teaser Tuesday

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Favorite Meme

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

It's the ultimate bookworm's meme, and I do it every time I see it...

The Rules:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.

As any longtime reader here knows, I am constantly - and very literally - surrounded by books when sitting at my desk.  Presently, I have a stack near me that I'm working my way through; each concerns our founding fathers, their religious views, and whether they founded this country on fundamental, orthodox Christian values.  It's all research for a group blog that I am honored to have been asked to contribute to called American Creation; head on over and give it a read.

The book I grabbed was on top, and is The Godless Constitution, A Moral Defense of the Secular State by Issac Kramnick and R. Laurence Moore:

The poor and the handicapped languished without adequate care.  Men drank too much, way too much, and returned to their homes to beat their wives and their children.  Prostitutes plied their trade in American cities.

Being the book-lover I am, I can never pass up a chance to do this meme when I see it floating around the blogosphere...

The Rules:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.

First, you must understand that crowded on, in, and all around my desk are books.  Many, many books.  The same can be said for the side of my bed and my nightstand and just about every square inch of available space in our apartment.  I love books.

Just to my right I saw two books I recently received (one, The Light Bearer, ordered from Amazon and another, The Monk, borrowed from my mother) so I decided to grab The Monk by Matthew Lewis, which was first published in 1796 and has been re-released as an Oxford World's Classic with an intro by Stephen King.  Here we go:

My grief was inexpressible.  As soon as its violence abated, I resolved to return to Strasbourg, to throw myself with my two Children at my Father's feet, and implore his forgiveness, though I little hoped to obtain it.  What was my consternation when informed, that no one entrusted with the secret of their retreat, was ever permitted to quit the troop of the Banditti; That I must give up all hopes of ever rejoining society, and consent instantly to accepting one of their Band for my Husband!

Post-Christmas Survey

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Nabbed this from the always lovely Darling Niki over at MySpace.

I always, for memory's sake, like to keep a list of what I received for Christmas...this little meme allows me to do that and record a few of 2007 Christmas's memorable events. Cheers.

1. Who did you spend your Christmas with?
Christmas Eve with Baret's family & Christmas day with mine. Ava was there, and that must *made* the holiday.

2. What did you get?
Actually I like to make a list of this every year for posterity, so here we go:
From Mom I got - as always - many great things...a slew of books from my Amazon Wish List, including When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka, Wonder When You'll Miss Me and Circling the Drain by Amanda Davis, Pregnant Darkness by Monika Wikman, Erotic Astrology by Olivia, More Messages from Michael by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and a new coffee table book (I collect these), Mythology. Also from my list, one of the Future Sounds of Jazz series (I want to own them all), Future Sounds of Jazz, Vol. 8. There was also a lovely, little sleep pant-set and four new shirts (which I needed). The only time I dress with any sense of style is when I wear clothes Mom and Amber buy for me or hand down to me. She also thew in the game Prison Tycoon 2: Maximum Security - while the game engine itself needs some work, I actually enjoy playing it (I'm a gamer - I can enjoy playing just about anything). Of course, she - as always - included my old stand-by, Witches' Calendar 2008. There was one year she forgot to get it for me and, I tell you, it was a miserable year! I was all off not knowing where the planets or when the Moon would be full. I must have this calendar every year, you see - it's a prerequisite in my life.

My sister got me The Golden Girls: The Complete First Season on DVD; I'm already more than halfway through it. I love this show! My brother got me a $25 gift certificate to Amazon. My "step-father" got me this awesome book, The Dead Guy Interviews by Michael A. Stusser (I'm already finished reading it!). From my grandfather, I received Dexter - The First Season on DVD and the book, Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, from which the show is based. Dad got us a new set of bath towels to add to the set he got us last year (we needed them). I received a beautiful glass candlestick from Baret's Dad (and a $100!) and a box of assorted teas (Tazo - yum!) from Baret's sister & her family. Baret's Mom sent us some money - more than she should have, the dear.

If there is anymore, I honestly can't remember it right now.

3. Where did you go for dinner?
We had Christmas dinner (supper) with my family at my grandfather's, as we do every year.

4. What time did you get up?
About 6am - my sis was the only other person in the house stirring. Slowly everyone joined us - but nothing began until Ava woke up.

5. Any traditions you carried on?
Just everyone joining up at Pa's for the second wave of Christmas Day.

6. What was the best gift you got?
That's a tough one - everything was really great. I really did love the clothes I got from Mom - they were all very much needed and all soo cute and flattering.

7. Who do you wish you spent Christmas with?
Those who know, know.

8. Did you do anything Christmas night?
On Christmas Eve, we met up at The Worm's uncle's for their traditional firework blow-out. His uncle spends a few hundred bucks on fireworks, there are huge pots of gumbo, and everyone just hangs out, watches the show, and has a lovely time.

9. Did you get engaged on Christmas Day?
No...but I honestly thought it might happen.

10. Did you get a pet for Christmas?
No, I did not.

11. What did you really want for Christmas but didn't get?
Tabla drums - but I wasn't expecting any.

12. Who bought you presents?
The usual suspects.

13. Overall how was your Christmas?
Getting to have it with Ava made it absolutely wonderful and magical.

14. Did you go shopping the day after christmas?
Oh hell no - never have, never will.

15. What did you buy?
Gifts for, again, the usual suspects.

16. Did you have to return anything?
Nope.

17. What was the worst gift you got?
They all rocked.

18. Was the mall crowded the day after Christmas?
I wasn't shopping, but was stuck at work. Though, had I been home, I still would not have known because I refuse to face the stores on that day.

19. Did you have to work on the day after Christmas?
Yes. Normally we have off and work Christmas Eve, but because the eve fell on Monday this year, they switcheroo'ed it.

A-Z of Me

Friday, January 19th, 2007

My buddy Rose has tagged me to do a meme; hopefully waking me out of my no-posting slumber...

Let's get to it...

Meme

A- Available or single? Aren't those the same thing? Regardless, I'm quite happily taken, thank you.

B- Best Friend? Brandon & Rose.

C- Cake or Pie? Neither, really. I'm not that big into sweets - I'd choose fruit over cake any day.

D- Drink of Choice? Non-alcoholic: Water or Black Tea. Alcoholic: Wine.

E- Essential Item? My computer(s), hands down.

F- Favorite Color? It's always been blood red, but in the last year (as you can see from my website, this blog, MySpace, etc.) I've developed this huge affinity for the color orange.

G- Gummi Bears or Worms? Oh, Gummi Bears! I love those things (except the green ones - never the green ones).

H- Hometown? I hail from a little town called Maringouin in Iberville Parish located in southern Louisiana. It's Cajun French or Indian (depending on who you ask) for "mosquito"; a fitting name as it has two, not one, bayous running through it. It's pronounced mah-ring-gwin.

I- Indulgence? Candlelit bubble baths.

J- January or February? February. January just sucks, always. And the month of Feb. brought me my awesome little sister back in 1981 so I'm rather fond of it.

K- Kids and names? No and none.

L- Life is incomplete without? Love.

M- Marriage Date? Don't have one. But The Worm and I celebrate consider our get-together date as August 28, 2001.

N- Number of Siblings? Two, both younger and one of each.

O- Oranges or apples? Oranges, yum!!

P- Phobias/Fears? Stickers and receipt paper (esp. wet). Don't ask.

Q- Favorite Quote? "Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear." - Thomas Jefferson

R- Reason to Smile? Sweetpea.

S- Season? Fall - every single thing about it.

T- Tag three people! Ryan, Andy, and Justice.

U- Unknown Fact About Me? My school bus was hit by a train in Kindergarten.

V- Vegetable you hate? Spinach. (I love fruits & veggies so much, I really had to think hard on this one!)

W- Worst habit? Laziness.

X- X-Rays you’ve had? Legs and lower back.

Y- Your favorite food? Pizza.

Z- Zodiac? Scorpio, and proud!

40 Questions About 2006

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

Yet another end-of-the-year-meme. I like these, though, because they help you get a perspective on the year past.

1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?

Became an aunt. Attended the funeral of a friend.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I didn't have any; I never do - so question not relevant.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

My brother's girlfriend gave birth to my first niece, Sweetpea, on May 2.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

I really hate that I have an answer for this one. Yes, my sister's boyfriend of ten years, my friend, and my "brother-in-law" in all the ways that counted, Guitar Rockstar. He was killed in a car accident on October 12.

5. What countries did you visit?

None.

6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?

An iPod, just because.

7. What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory?

May 2 and October 12.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Designing an official state agency's logo/emblem. Sticking to my guns and having dignity when losing out on a job for petty reasons beyond my control.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I didn't have any.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Just the usual leg pains and sinus infections.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My Tibetan singing bowl, my wrap, and my mala beads.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

My sister; for being the strongest person I have ever known. I am so proud of her.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

My Dad; alcohol has finally ruined him. He is no longer the man any of us once knew.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Bills and books, like usual.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

The birth of my niece.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2006?

Guitar Rockstar's song, played at his funeral, and that's on his MySpace; Keep Me Close by Absent Element/ Chris Daughtry (I know it didn't come out in 2006). I still can't listen to it, and it will forever remind me of him and of us losing him.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a. Happier or sadder? I don't know.
b. Thinner or fatter? I've gained a little.
c. Richer or poorer? Pretty much the same.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Gone out more with Tweeze and Guitar Rockstar when they'd asked us to.

Being depressed.

I'm already in love.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?

None.

24. What was your favourite TV programme?

Paula Deen's cooking show and MXC.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

I have more hate for a particular person because I know more now than I did before. She will remain nameless because she doesn't deserve mention; I'm hoping ignoring her existence will make her dark, evil self cease to exist.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?

Lamb, by Christopher Moore
Madeline's Ghost, by Robert Girardi

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

The Brazilian Girls.

28. What did you want and get?

A beautiful, healthy niece.

29. What did you want and not get?

An iPod.

I'm always behind on watching movies, so forgive me that these all came out before 2006 (they were "new to me"):

The Notebook
Underworld: Evolution

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 29, but I don't remember what I did. It was a pretty somber occasion this year, with what all happened in October.

Finally getting the raise I deserve at work.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006.

Cherish your loved ones every day.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?

Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drives me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
- Whisper, Evanescence
